Lecce

December 9, 2011

Everywhere in Lecce are monuments, churches, balconies and terraces showing that Lecce is steeped in history. The Roman amphitheatre is an example of the past in. It was buried underneath debris after several earthquakes but has been partially excacvated. About a third of the original amphitheatre is visible but it is still very interesting to see.

There many beautiful churches in Lecce but the one I liked best was the Basilica di Santa Croce in the middle of Lecce. St Oronzo Square is the main square in Lecce and there are many statues including one of St Oronzo blessing the city. All around are beautiful buildings some of which have been standing since the Middle Ages.

The day is over and it’s time to dine then have some fun. The food here is really good so eat where the locals eat for the real taste of Lecce. After dinner there are plenty of clubs and pubs around. Lecce is a university city so follow the students who always know where to go! There is a British style pub and an Irish one too where you might find a better known beer! If you fancy an ice cream you must go to Gelateria Natale where they have loads of flavours. The ice cream is simply the best in Lecce. In summer the coast of Lecce is the place to go. There are great discos, night clubs on the beach and pubs to have fun in. You’ll have a great holiday in Lecce.
